The Mongol-American Khovd Archaeology Project aims to advance material investigations of the peoples and cultures of the Altai Mountains, a crucial region between the nomads of the Mongolian steppes and the Silk Roads area within present-day northwest China and Kazakhstan. The project is a collaborative effort to integrate scholars and students from different countries and institutions in archaeological endeavors, including ethnographic interviews, site surveys, archaeological excavations, bioarchaeology, and materials conservation.

Expeditions

Annual expeditions to survey areas and excavation sites are run by a joint staff of Mongolian and foreign researchers, and include a crew of students from the local Khovd University. Archaeological work at the site is prefaced and concluded by two cross-country trips to see several other sites and the varied geographical regions of central and western Mongolia. A handful of spots are available each year for interested participants who apply to be part of the Silkroad Foundation sponsored summer programs.
